The transition to Monte Albán II was accompanied again by a rapid increase in population, and again we must infer that there was a major change in external factors driving this expansion.
About 100 BC saw the emergence of the Monte Albán II epoch - transfer from a chiefdom to a large (valley-wide) state. The population again grew rapidly to over 40,000, and we must infer that some external factor invalidated Model 2. Presumably the move to a valley-wide state. Adding to resources: in Monte Albán II there were many more small outlying comminities contributing to the resources of the city.
